Dog Approved People Food

I feel like I am or someone around me is always asking, “Can dogs eat this?”  If you have a hard time feeding your dog their pet-only food, this article is for you.  Just so you do not have to Google what dogs can or can not have, next time you give them your table scraps.  People food is okay, but certain ones as we know are fatal to dogs, such as chocolate, onions, grapes, raisins, yeast dough, macadamia nuts, avocado, alcohol, or coffee.

healthy dog with a carrot

My dogs love apples, edamame (sans their shell), and carrots. I try to feed them healthier treats when I do feed them a “treat” or slip them a piece of what we are eating.  Here is a list of some dog approved foods and why.  Peanut butter (we all know dogs love PB and they even make dog Peanut Butter now) is a good source of protein.  Cottage cheese (as long as your dog is not lactose intolerant) as a treat, but monitor your dog after they eat it.  Carrots are great for their teeth and rich in beta carotene/vitamin A.  Sugar-free yogurt is a probiotic and good for their digestive systems.  Pumpkin is a great source of fiber, you can buy it in a can (the one you would buy for a pumpkin pie).  Apple slices of course, they help clean the leftovers off their teeth and are a good source of Vitamin A and C.  And eggs are even a healthy snack, next time you are making breakfast, scramble one up for your pup!  If you want to read more about other foods that are dog-friendly, go to

Research online before you give your dog any human food, if you do not already know.  If your dog has any kind of unusual reaction please call your veterinary hospital.

What is 2 Million Dogs?

Little Friends recently signed up for an amazing event, called Puppy Up! in Lake Norman on November 8th and we want to share some information about it with everyone!  Puppy Up! began with a promise to raise awareness of canine cancer one mile, one city and one person at a time.  It started in 2008, with Luke Robinson and his two dogs, walking 2,000 miles from Austin to Boston to fulfill the promise he made to his dog Malcolm, who died from canine cancer.  With the walk being over, they need help to continue fulfilling this.  The idea was formed on the premise that if 2 dogs can walk 2,000 miles then 2 million dogs can walk 2 miles.  This years goal is to raise $15,000!

2 million dogs

The second annual Puppy Up! Lake Norman event is at 9:30-12:00 pm at Jetton Park in Cornelius.  Little Friends will have a table there and we look forward to seeing everyone!  This event raises money to fund canine cancer and oncology research and the goal is to rid the world of its deadliest disease.  Come out and honor the friends that we have lost and walk for those we can still help.  If you are interested in donating, sponsoring or being a vendor go to their website,  We encourage all of you to be a part of the event  on November 8th, see you at 19000 Jetton Road Cornelius, NC 28031 at 9:30 am.

K-9 Capers to the Rescue!

Have you heard of K-9 Capers in Concord?  Does your pup need family-friendly (kids must be on board too) training?  If you have not heard of them, you must check K-9 Capers out!  They are a  “reward based” dog training facility  that can help you train your dog or puppy based on their breed/mix.  They help you understand your pet’s needs and make sure their needs are met as well.  K-9 Capers offers family- friendly behavior modification training programs as well.  Since no two dogs are alike, individual learning plans are created that work with your dog and family!

If you have a puppy, they offer a new program called “Academy Day School” for puppies 12 weeks and older.  The Academy day training program is much like private school for children.  Your pup will become socialized while exercising their mind and learning new skills. The planned activities and playgroups are structured in accordance to Dr Karen Pryor, founder of innovative positive clicker training used at Sea World and other training facilities worldwide.  These exercises and training games will help your dog with self-control,obedience, sharing toys, and becoming a better family member. A well exercised and socialized dog is fun to have in your home, and less likely to be destructive or disobedient.  You drop your dog off at our training facility 2-3 times per week for a full or half a day’s intensive training, exercise and play. Total number of weeks depends on your training goals, but 3-4 is typical  and play dates can be discussed.

They also offer boarding, grooming, private lessons and a variety of classes/workshops.  If you are interested in any of their services or programs, please visit their website for more information and pricing,  The prices are very reasonable as well.  K-9 Capers Dog Training Academy is located at 2139 Supply Court  Concord, NC 28027.
