DIY Dog Treats for Fall

Fall is in there air! It’s time to enjoy all of your favorite fall festivities, sweater weather, and pumpkin-flavoured everything. This year, why not get your pup in on the fun?

Store-bought treats are commonly packed with unhealthy fillers and animal byproduct (a.k.a. not meat, ew!). Ditch the usual stuff and spoil your dog this season with one of these delicious DIY Fall flavored treats that are sure to please. They’re easy to make, budget-friendly, and will have your furbaby begging for more!

Peanut Butter & Pumpkin Treats

What You’ll Need

  1. 2 ½ cups whole wheat flour
  2. ½ cup canned pumpkin
  3. ½ teaspoon salt
  4. 2 eggs
  5. 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  6. ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  7. water (as needed)
  8. large bowl
  9. whisk
  10. rolling pin
  11. knife or cookie cutter
  12. cookie sheet

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees
  2. Whisk together the flour, eggs, pumpkin, Peanut butter, salt, and cinnamon in a large bowl. Add water as needed to help make the dough workable, but the dough should be dry and stiff.
  3. Roll the dough into a ½-inch-thick roll and cut into ½ inch pieces. Place the pieces on a greased or non-stick baking sheet.
  4. Bake in your preheated oven until hard, about 40 minutes.

Sweet Potato Chews

What You’ll Need

  1. sweet potatoes
  2. oil
  3. a sharp knife or mandoline
  4. cookie sheet

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to the lowest setting. (175 degrees works great)
  2. Slice off the top of the potatoes.
  3. Cut thick slices (about ⅓ inch, they will lose most of their thickness when dehydrating) lengthwise using a sharp knife or mandoline.
  4. Arrange slices on a greased baking sheet.
  5. Place on the top rack in the oven and allow to dehydrate for 4-8 hours. For a shorter dehydration time, increase the temperature to 220-240 degrees.

Cinnamon Apple Bones

What You’ll Need

  1. ½ cup cold water
  2. 2 ½ cups whole wheat flour
  3. 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  4. ½ cup cornmeal
  5. ⅓ cup vegetable oil
  6. 1 finely chopped or grated apple
  7. ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  8. bone-shaped cookie cutter
  9. Large bowl
  10. Rolling pin
  11. cookie sheet

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grease your cookie sheet.
  2. Blend the flour and cornmeal in a large bowl, then add apple, egg, oil, brown sugar, cinnamon, and water and mix until fully blended.
  3. Roll the dough on a floured surface until ½ thick
  4. Cut the cookies to your desired shape and size.
  5. Place cookies on the baking sheet and bake for 35 minutes.
  6. After baking, turn the oven off and leave the cookies inside for another 30 minutes until crisp.
